So it’s a quiz about God you want?

Dan Calabrese

In followup to my piece yesterday, some challenged me to make good on my statement that I could easily develop a quiz of 32 questions – not pertaining to the religious traditions of man as the Pew Forum did – but pertaining to the character of God as revealed in the Old and New Testaments.

You got it. If you want to try the answers, do us a favor and identify yourself by roughly the same categories Pew used: atheist/agnostic, evangelical Christian, mainline protestant, Catholic, Mormon, Muslim, Jew or whatever else.

No cheating!

Forget the racial stuff. We can let the Pew Forum and the legacy media obsess over race.

Two things about this: First, it’s not an open book test, so no checking your Bibles for the answers. You’re on the honor system, people! Second, in fairness to those who are not Bible scholars, you don’t need to cite Bible passages to support your answers, and please don’t.

Also, it occurred to me that if people do the quiz in the comments section, everyone can copy everyone else’s answers. So e-mail them to me instead at dan@northstarwriters.com, and be sure to tell me the category you fit.

Here’s the quiz:

1. When did the existence of Christ begin?

2. What does God mean when he refers to himself as a “jealous God”?

3. What does Satan need before he is able to attack Job?

4. What does Jesus say about the prospect of a rich man entering Heaven?

5. When one of his apostles says that a bottle of perfume poured over him should have been sold, with the money given to the poor, what does Jesus say?

6. Why is Jesus, referred to in Revelation as the lamb who was slain, the only one who is worthy to open the scroll containing the names of those listed in the Book of Life?

7. What does Jesus have to say about the role of government in bringing about social and economic justice?

8. Why does John say the world rejected the light Jesus brought into the world?

9. After the end of the world, God will bring about a new Heaven and a new Earth, which will no longer contain certain things. What are those things?

10. What does the Bible say about why its contents are trustworthy?

11. Why was Moses not allowed to enter the Promised Land? Be specific about what happened and why God had a problem with it.

12. After Satan’s rebellion against God fails, where is he thrown down to?

13. What would have changed about God’s relationship with mankind if Satan had succeeded at tempting Jesus to sin?

14. At what point in a person’s life is the opportunity to be forgiven for sin no longer available?

15. Is there any sin the Bible says will not be forgiven?

16. What does the Bible say is the “wage” or price to be paid for committing sin?

17. What will be Satan’s ultimate fate?

18. What is the nature of the relationship between the Holy Spirit and individual believers?

19. What does the Bible say in response to those who claim not to know about God?

20. What does the Bible say about how old the Earth is?

21. Why does the New Testament say that the Law of Moses couldn’t save anyone?

22. Why won’t God just forgive anyone and let them into Heaven?

23. When God commands believers to give him 10 percent of their income, who does he put in charge of making sure they do?

24. The Bible says that without one thing, all other virtues are worthless. What is that one thing? (The answer is not God.)

25. Why is the criminal who is crucified next to Jesus allowed to go with him into paradise?

26. James says faith is dead without what?

27. What does the Bible tell people to do when they encounter spirits? How is this done?

28. Why does Jesus tell the rich young ruler that he will not be allowed to follow him?

29. Why does Jesus say it’s unnecessary for us to worry about getting the things we need?

30. After Jesus ascends into Heaven, the apostles return to the upper room. What happens to them just before Peter stands up and begins teaching and leading them?

31. Why did demons refuse to obey certain people who tried to cast them out in the name of Jesus?

32. When he instructs us to obey God’s commands, what is the one thing Jesus says we can do that sums up all of these commands?

That’s it. Good luck!

  • Dave:

This isn’t a quiz about God. This is a quiz about Christianity.

  • What’s really important is that Jesus shows us that being liberal is something to strive for.

  • michael:

I don’t think this little quiz would make Christians look any better if the results were made public, on the contrary, I doubt an average above 5 correct. Michael the atheist got 7 correct. I think what you’re doing is shining a bright light on the ignorance of believers.
