Danny Williams, premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, underwent heart surgery in an undisclosed United States hospital on Thursday.
According to Deputy Premier Kathy Dunderdale, Williams received treatment from a “renowned expert in the procedure” that the premier needed. Dunderdale would not disclose the nature of Williams’s procedure, nor how the Newfoundland leader would pay for it.
Coming to America.
Does Williams’s decision to travel to America for his heart surgery suggest that the procedure he needed was unavailable in Canada, or does it mean that the wait time required for getting the treatment was too long for him to survive before eligible for the procedure?
Since being a provincial premier would afford Williams preferential treatment for a life preserving medical procedure, it is likely that the operation was not an available option in either Newfoundland or elsewhere in Canada.
Indeed, the deputy premier acknowledged that the particular operation Williams needed was not available in Newfoundland.
Imagine a governor of any U.S. state traveling to another country for a medical procedure that was unavailable in this country. There would not only be howls of protests in the media, but likely congressional hearings would follow asking serious questions.
President Obama has extolled the virtues of the Canadian single-payer medical plan repeatedly in the past.
Perhaps this would be a good time for Obama and other Democratic leaders pushing hard to implement their so-called health care reform to rethink their plans.
If a Canadian-style single-payer system isn’t good enough for a Canadian premier, how long will it be until a universal medical coverage plan in America will not have sufficient resources for a member of Congress?
Premier Williams has promised to give to the media all the details of his medical needs and his medical treatment in America after he recovers from his surgery.

When Dunderdale was questioned about Williams decision to shun Canadian’s medical community in favor of America’s, she retorted that Premier Williams hasn’t done anything “that anybody else in the same circumstances wouldn’t have considered and acted in the same way,” according to Canwest News Service.
Since there aren’t too many Canadians worth millions of dollars who are premiers of a Canadian province, Dunderdale’s claim is as hollow as only a politician’s words could be.
The fact that the Premier had to seek treatment outside his own country is an indictment of the Canadian health care system, nothing more, nothing less. The only reason his decision to abandon Canada in search for superior medical treatment in the United States garnered media coverage in this country is that Williams holds such a lofty political position.
Not surprisingly, there hasn’t been much American media attention given to this story. It couldn’t be because the president’s sycophant media wouldn’t want Americans to learn the truth about troubles in Canada’s much touted health care system, could it?
What also does not receive media attention are the thousands of Canadians who cross over the border seeking medical care in the United States every year. “Long waits, doctor shortages and an inability to access timely health care in Ontario have forced thousands of people to seek medical care across the border,” according to an investigation launched by Canadian CTVglobemedia, a national news network.
One must wonder how many Canadians are there who can’t afford to travel to America, much less pay for the type of care Williams received. How many Canadians have died because a procedure routinely available in this country was not available in Canada?
The Canadian health care system’s biggest advantage over America’s appears to be the easy accessibility to America’s medical care.
If America adopts her northern neighbor’s government-funded medical system, where will America’s wealthy and politically connected find their safety valve?
