Fort Hood: Call it what it is – terrorism

Andy Hefty

While driving home from the office, I learned more details from the terrorist attack at Fort Hood, Texas.  Yes, you read that right.  This is a terrorist attack.  FBI investigators refused to say so.  Even President Obama glossed over it by calling it a “horrific outburst of violence.”

Terrorist.

Terrorist.

But I will call it as I see it – a terrorist attack.  And it should be dealt with accordingly.

Here’s why.

First of all, Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan allegedly opened fire upon his own countrymen – his fellow soldiers – on a military installation.  He continued shooting, reloading, and shooting some more.  He wasn’t after a vindictive ex-wife.  He didn’t take revenge on specific individuals that allegedly taunted him for being Muslim.

He just opened fire, killing randomly.

He terrorized the base.  And our nation.

Speculation is flying wildly.  Everyone has their own theories, but I will withhold posting mine for now.  But know this:  Going through with this type of attack, regardless of philosophy, religion, motive, intent, target or scene, is terrorism.  To state otherwise only compounds the problem.

  • Rian:

Right on! My husband and I were just having a heated discussion about why this attack was not being labeled for what it is! A TERRORIST attack! We both agree on this completely. We are both in the military and are sickened that the media and our “President” are as you say “glossing over” the issue. We recommend death by firing squad for the Major who would dare arm himself against his fellow soldiers and countrymen. It’s bad enough that terrorists see that we offer slaps on the wrist for attacking our country but if this man gets by with only going to prison (which of course, we the tax payers will pay for his care), then the terrorists will continue to see that we have become a nation that is weak on punishment for the worst of crimes. Thank you for speaking the truth!

  • Pamela Troy:

And while we’re at it let’s call other things “terrorism” — like the murders of Drs. Tiller, Slepian, and other abortion providers, the bombings of abortion clinics, the killings in Knoxville last year…

Rian — What terrorists do you feel have gotten “slaps on the wrist?”

  • Jimmy:

Hey Pamela!! let me take this one for Rian….How about ‘Said Ali al-Shihri’. He is a terrrorist that was released from Gitmo in 2007. He then went to Yemen where he was involved in bombings of the American Embassy in Sana. That was under the Bush administration…. and now Obama wants to close Gitmo??? Yeah, that sounds pretty smart, huh?

Now to your diversion from the topic at hand… Yes, bombings of abortion clinics may, in fact, be terrorism. (Although, I would call dismembering and sucking a child out of a woman terrorism. It is at least, certainly MURDER.)That said, two wrongs don’t make a right and acts against abortion clinics very well COULD be classified as domestic terrorism. Regardless, I don’t see anyone here claiming the contrary here. As a matter of fact, YOU were the one that ignored the issue discussed in the article and tried to turn it into a debate on violence against vile, murdering, doctors! Let me make sure I understand.. is it your contention that Muslim Terrorists are somehow less evil than those that murder abortionists? I think they are both murderous scumbags… as are the doctors that would take human life. If you want to have a discussion on abortion that is one thing, but rather than defend our Troops at Hood you choose to make a political statement on abortion!!!
If I have somehow misunderstood your point, I apologize but I fail to see how anti-abortion radicalism has anything to do with what was discussed here. I don’t know many people that would disagree with what you are saying but can you please state a clear position on how you percieve the acts at Hood?

  • Pamela Troy:

Jimmy: How about ‘Said Ali al-Shihri’. He is a terrrorist that was released from Gitmo in 2007.

Being in Gitmo for six years qualifies as a “slap on the wrist?”

Jimmy: and now Obama wants to close Gitmo??? Yeah, that sounds pretty smart, huh?

And you’re assuming that closing Gitmo means that all suspects will simply be released?

Actually, what was thuddingly dumb was using Gitmo as the Bush administration did in the first place.

Jimmy: Yes, bombings of abortion clinics may, in fact, be terrorism

    MAY?

Jimmy: Regardless, I don’t see anyone here claiming the contrary here.

You’re claiming that bombing clinics, maiming and murdering clinic workers, and gunning down physicians isn’t definitely terrorism. It MIGHT be terrorism.

Care to defend this incredible claim?

Jimmy: is it your contention that Muslim Terrorists are somehow less evil than those that murder abortionists?

No, it is not. But it has consistently been much of the right’s contention – illustrated here by your equivocating about whether or not bombing abortion clinics and murdering abortion physicians qualifies as terrorism – that the terrorism aimed at abortion clinics somehow doesn’t quite qualify as “terrorism.”

Jimmy: I think they are both murderous scumbags…

But Scott Roeder. only MIGHT a terrorist while Malik Nidal Hasan IS a terrorist.

Jimmy: as are the doctors that would take human life.

And the soldiers who take human life? Are they “murdering scumbags?”

Smearing and vilifying the victims of right-wing Christian terrorism is as disgusting and reprehensible as smearing and vilifying the victims of right-wing Islamic terrorism.

Jimmy: I fail to see how anti-abortion radicalism has anything to do with what was discussed here.

What’s being discussed here is the application of the term “terrorism.”

Do you think the term “terrorist” should be applied to jim David Adkisson? You know, the guy who walked into a Unitarian church in Knoxville and began shooting because he wanted to kill liberals?

Jimmy; can you please state a clear position on how you percieve the acts at Hood?

I don’t know. That’s the only right answer at this point. I don’t know yet whether the guy’s actions can be reasonable described as “terrorism” or a case of a single man cracking and acting out on some sort of sick personal vendetta.

I do know that the term “terrorist” is applied damned inconsistently by a lot of people, especially those on the right, when the issue is cases like the death of Dr. Tiller or those people killed in Knoxville Tennessee because Adkisson could not actually get to the more prominent liberals he WANTED to kill.

  • Bryan:

It was a suicide attack by a Muslim terrorist. he defended Muslim suicide bombers.

  • Call It What It Is: The Abortion Issue was used as a diversion. YES IT IS TERRORISM. I have read
their were indications their was a problem with
the Terrorist Major, Probably the reason it was not brought to anyone’s attention. They did not want to be chewed out for not being Politically Correct!Because of that term, Americans have the lost the Right To Be Free Speech. The Major is a Terrorist,it is reported he will be paralized the rest of his life. Our taxes will pay for his care.

  • Pamela Troy:

Jacqueline: It’s not a “diversion” to demand that a word like “terrorist” be applied consistently.

  • Pamela Troy:

And by the way Jacqueline — Fort Hood is not exactly a hotbed of political correctitude.

  • Aaron:

Terrorism- use of force or threats to demoralize, intimidate, and subjugate, esp. such use as a political or religious weapon or policy. According to Webster anyways. Looks like we have terrorist everywhere. Defining terrorism is a moot point, especially when people have such hazy views on right and wrong. Taking another human beings life for any other reason than protecting others from harm is wrong. It is black and white folks. There is no grey area and it should be dealt with accordingly. And if you don’t agree with me: A. look it up and B. you are probably a racist.

  • Maggie:

Recently I had a conversation with my Grandson. He blamed his parents for not being more agressive with him to continue his college education. He said they were just not into education and therefore did not encourage him to continue and here he is now at 25 trying to get into collge at a time when he should have been well on his way in his career. I advised him that I did not blame him for his unorthodox opinion. He was socially engineered in public school to blame everyone else for his short comings and only he could look deep within and see his own fault and grown up choice that took him to his educational short comings. I might was well have been talking to the wall. He has grown up in America at a time when something as silly as tripping over a crack in the sidewalk brings on a law suit blaming the city for not property maintaining the walk way. While muslims hve recently been grated money for scaring the shit out of fellow passengers considering their civil rights to pray out loud on a plane and bow to the East while passengers just wanted to get from here to there in one piece, the airlines was blamed for not adhering to the civil rights of muslims I guess to instill fear amoung others. I wonder if I, began singing the Old Rugged Cross out loud and chanting the Lord’s Prayer would have been treated the same? It think not. This man is a Muslim terriorist. He planned this killing, he carried it out in the cowardly way Muslims do, an act of force on the innocent, and there is no allegedly about it, he did it. He was seen doing it, he voiced his anti-American sentiments and nothing was done. Why? Because we now have so many enemies amoung us that is is politically correct to wait unti they have killed innocent people before anything is done. And what does our left wing nut media report? That he was harrassed, that he had a nervous breakdown, that he was wronged, etc. Bill was right on and I applaud him over and over and over. America may be lost to the Muslims thanks to our pathetic cowardly government (wait until Obama brings Gitmo guys over here to be pampered while they plan attacks on the innocent.) Vote out the terrorist sympathizers in congress. Let them eat cake. If my opinions make me a racist, so be it. I personally don’t care anymore and neither do millions of other Americans who want their country safe.

  • Patrick Sweeney:

Andy Heft, you write “FBI investigators refused to say so” That is, that the attack was terrorism]. What’s your source for the FBI initial reaction on 11/5?

  • Christanic terrorism is far, far worse. Christian baby killers invaded Iraq — a country that posed no threat to anybody — and raped, wtrtured, and slaughtered their way through one million innocent people.

Christanic terrorism is the worse brand of terrorism in the world. The United States operates the “School of the Americas” and as such the US is the world’s worse terrorist State that exports trained baby killers.
