Who is Thorbjorn Jagland? Obama’s Nobel patron is a long-time leader of Socialist International

With the choice of President Obama for the Nobel Peace Prize inspiring such widespread befuddlement, it seems worthwhile to ask, just who are these people who made this choice, and what might their agenda be?

Accompanying news stories on the award were photos of a smiling Thorbjorn Jagland, chairman of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee, admiringly hold a photo of the U.S. president.

Vice president, Socialist International

Vice president, Socialist International

This is the man who spoke gushingly about the hope Obama has inspired. Who is Thorbjorn Jagland?

Some stories have reported that he is the former prime minister of Norway, and that he was the leader of the Norwegian Labor Party for 10 years. But he recently completed an even more interesting 10-year tenure.

From 1999 through 2008, Jagland was vice president of Socialist International. What’s that? It’s exactly what the name suggests – an international organization of socialist groups who advocate for far left policies. It also boasts of “consultative status” with the United Nations.

Its statement of principles calls for “the internationalisation of the economy” and all sort of other socialist boilerplate. It also rejects the notion of “armed peace” between superpowers, and wants Europe to play a lead role in basically disarming everyone.

Socialist International has member organizations from most countries, including one from the United States, Democratic Socialists of America, which touts its vision of what it calls an “alternative to capitalism.” Its newsletter, The Activist, is filled with articles that sing the praises of folks like Karl Marx and the late socialist radical Michael Harrington.

Jagland also serves as chairman of the board of the Oslo Center, which pursues Jimmy Carter-like interventions into conflicts and tries to mediate peace talks (in fact, the Oslo Center and the Carter Center work together), and came under criticism when he was selected as Oslo Center chairman because he was still president of the Norwegian parliament at the time, and was accepting money for both gigs.

It is no surprise, given his memberships and proclivities, that Jagland would welcome a weakened United States on the international stage. Of course, for one to be a socialist in the European setting is hardly a shocker. Many left-wing political parties in Europe are open about their socialism. They embrace groups like the Oslo Center and the United Nations because these are forums in which the United States is only one voice among many.

For the European socialist who detests the idea of the United States as the world’s pre-eminent power, giving over international decision-making authority to groups like these furthers the goal of a world in which socialist despots have just as much say in the affairs of the world as free, democratic nations.

This does not necessarily prove that President Obama is a socialist. Indeed, the aforementioned Democratic Socialists of America lament on their web site that he is not one of them, and express no end of their frustration in this regard.

But what it does show is the agenda of the people who chose Obama for the Nobel Peace Prize, not to mention the fact that, for whatever reason, they see tremendous hope in him and in what they expect him to do.

What might that be? Stand down in Afghanistan? Give over enforcement of environmental regulations to the UN? Abandon U.S. support of Israel? These are all socialist priorities.

Obama has already sold out Eastern Europe on the question of missile defenses. No wonder Jagland likes him.

The Nobel Peace Prize is regarded as an extremely prestigious award, but when you actually find out who chooses the winners, you realize it is a radical outfit with a decidedly anti-American agenda. The fact that they are so excited about Barack Obama being president of the United States, given their broader agenda for the world, should be the real – and very disturbing – news here.

  • Thorbjorn Jagland may have done the citizens of the United States of America a big favor. The favor being that we now have another hint of the socialist proclivities of our great “Change You Can Believe In” President, Barack Hussein Obama. Of course it takes a naive and uniformed voter to not know his socialist tendencies already.

Our great President has been waving giant red flags about his affinity to Socialism starting with the campaign comments to Joe the Plumber. His Czars are mostly a collection of radicals, socialists and community organizers a.k.a. rebel rousing thugs. At the very least his Czar picks are raving liberals and leftovers from the radicals and college student movements of the 60′s and 70′s.

Looking to the future, what will be the legacy of the “Anointed One” and what will be the title of his obligatory book after his term in office ends. May I suggest a book title “Trashing The Constitution, Article by Article”. His legacy could be “The transformational President that parlayed is lack of experience and socialist dogma into destroying the economy and the social fabric that held the country together from it’s funding in 1776”.

  • Michael:

The Norwegians developed another name for people like this during World War II. Quisling! Jagland is simply the reincarnated Quisling.

    Dear Dan,

Thank you for continuing to make us keep losing faith in the idea that the people of the US hold some sort of intelligence.

  • Norwegian libertarian journalist:

Giving the Nobel Peace Prize to Obama was incredibly stupid, but in the global war on stupidity, this site’s editor-in-chief is obviously fighting on Jagland’s side.

The Socialist International is no revolutionary hotbed, and far, far from an organisation touting “far left policies”. Most of it’s member parties represent policies far to the right of liberal Democratic congressmen. The UK’s ruling Labour party is a member, for crying out loud. And the Oslo Center was founded and is led by Kjell Magne Bondevik, former Christian conservative prime minister of Norway, and fond friend of Israel.

Jagland’s most important position is his post as secretary general of the Council of Europe. He’s not a crazed communist revolutionary, he is a pretentious politician who failed miserably in his bid to become prime minister of Norway. Who is nearing the end of his career and who wants desperately to be noticed internationally.

I realise you desperately want to sell your column to newspapers, but come on. You need to work harder than this. Unless you are secretely working for the Obama administration trying to make the right look stupid. If that is the case: Good job.

  • I’m glad somebody took time out to point out that this prize came from a socialist.

And as for the Socialist International not being far left – by American standards, yes, it is far left. By European standards, it’s center-left.

Many of us in America still happen to believe in individualism and oppose collectivism.

How’s that collectivism working out for you, anyway? Government bailouts, and now the UK government is considering selling assets to come up with money to fund your social services, eh?

  • I truly love hearing people who frighten the low man into believing that Socialism is a worst word in the world! That’s great do you call yourself a Christian?Well blow me down His Holiness Christ taught Socialism.Don’t take my word as I am just a man!Read your Bible with out help from pastors or any other that says they know the Bible(hog wash)Please Please read for yourself. He ran the money changers from his door,he said that the money man has all the ability to enter Heaven as a camel has to go thou a needle. He taught help all as your father has told you?Say WHAT go back to your bible on your own and you’ll see what is written there!

  • Hiya Tom,

Good call there. Jesus was a socialist so yea, we should base our politics on Christianity. Maybe we should outlaw fornication while we’re at it.

if the stupidity was a virtue ,norway would win that award

  • Barack Obama was a member of the Democratic socialists, or the New Party, as it was known. It was found in an article submitted by Bruce Bentley in the summer of 1996.

Excelente trabajo y información . Gracias Dan… desde Barcelona Spain.

  • Jim Waxx:

what a joke the Nobel Prize is now. The USA is laughing at Obama. He deserves no such award. you guys are all clowns.

  • john:

Norway was practicing capitalism before the US existed, and still do to this day.

Jagland is a socialist democrat. Hardly a radical. Plus, Obama never asked for the prize anyway.

I am from Norway. To think that Jagland has some kind of radical agenda is pathetic. The article author failed to mention that Jagland is set to become the next secretary-general of the Council of Europe, so I am sure he would not mind establishing ties to Washington…

With that being said, three of five of the members of the Peace Prize Committee are conservatives. Only one of them voted against.

The decision to give the Peace Prize to Obama has in Norway come under fire mainly from the political left or the socialist democrats.

  • Gunnar Øyro:

If you had done just a little bit research, you would have learned that the political party that Jagland represents is not socialistic at all. It is social-democratic which is somthing completely different, and you would do good to try to understand the difference!
And if you had done further research you would have learned that far from that “Jagland would welcome a weakened United States on the international stage”, he is quite US-friendly.
    So study harder, my friend!

  • Norwegian:

Yup as a Norwegian it is a bit sad to read this, because the truth is that Jagland is an idiot – on a personal level i don’t know, but as a politician he has left a trace of clumsy incidents. This is of course not unique, the war criminal George W Bush is a good example of a stupid politician with countless stupid statements. As of giving the price to Obama, there are good reasons to let him have it according to the statues of the Nobel Price (which hardly any of the critics have read) but the reasons for NOT giving the price to Obama exceeds those in favour of giving it to him.

I’m not even going to comment on your efforts to present socialism as a “alternative” to democracy, you have a long way ahead of you when it comes to learning about ideologies, and how the fit into the political world of 2009.

  • Very nice blog,i will be back shortly.thank you

  • Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
